- Although the Pope would not be bound to them, technically, as the Supreme Legislator which comes from his Office as the one "binds and looses, could the Electors demand certain promises from a Pope such as retirement after a fixed term, or the choice of a particular person as Secretary of State?
- Would it be possible for a Pope to have a coadjutor with the right of succession, as any other diocesan bishop may have? Presumably unlike an other Bishop the Bishop of Rome would choose him himself unless he chose to delegate that authority.
- Would it be possible for a Pope to delegate his powers to a Legate or Legatine Council? Presumably it would be necessary for him to to preside over such a Council, if only nominally.
Idle speculations, indeed!
But some things to think about whilst we watch and pray.
